Scripture Union Daily Guide 3rd January 2026 Outline

The baptism of Jesus marked the beginning of His earthly messianic assignment. He started by identifying with the people and submitted Himself under John to be baptized. However, He did this with an attitude of prayer. And heaven was opened (Luke 3:21). What personal lessons can you learn from the example of Jesus if you also must secure an open heaven on your life and work?

One of the features of open heaven for Jesus was the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Him (Luke 3:12). Can you identify other features? Jesus did not go about introducing Himself as the Son of God. He waited for God to introduce Him to the world. How can you apply this to your personal life?

The genealogy of Jesus is a testimony to the fact of Jesus’ humanity. He also had human ancestry. The Son of God is also the son of man. He was subjected to the same feelings and limitations as we are, yet without sin (Hebrews 4:15). This qualified Him to take our place in the punishment for sin (Galatians 1:3-4).

Hymn: Our God, our help in ages past
1. Our God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home.

2. Under the shadow of Thy throne
Thy saints have dwelt secure;
Sufficient is Thine arm alone,
And our defense is sure.

3. Before the hills in order stood,
Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting Thou art God,
To endless years the same.

4. Thy Word commands our flesh to dust,
Return, ye sons of men:
All nations rose from earth at first,
And turn to earth again.

5. A thousand ages in Thy sight
Are like an evening gone;
Short as the watch that ends the night
Before the rising sun.

6. The busy tribes of flesh and blood,
With all their lives and cares,
Are carried downwards by the flood,
And lost in following years.

7. Time, like an ever rolling stream,
Bears all its sons away;
They fly, forgotten, as a dream
Dies at the opening day.

8. Like flowery fields the nations stand
Pleased with the morning light;
The flowers beneath the mower’s hand
Lie withering ere ‘tis night.

9. Our God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Be Thou our guard while troubles last,
And our eternal home.
